The teachers aim to provide the pupils, now adolescents, with new perspectives, by directing their attention out into the world, through lessons in Astronomy, world geography and the Voyages of Discovery. The pupils are be encouraged to take the initiative and to appreciate ideas that have an abstract and logical character. They are encouraged to challenge the attitudes and assumptions, formerly accepted on authority. They need to be shown how to formulate their own points of view as well as accepting that others may see the world differently. The teacher will increasingly appeal to the individual judgement of the children. At this age it is important for the class to experience themselves both as world citizens but also as individuals who have social responsibilities.
