Build a little bird table in your school

BUILD A LITTLE BIRD TABLE IN YOUR SCHOOL

Bird TablesThe students of the Steiner school, not content to simply feed the birds, have also built their very own birdhouses from recycled bits and bobs, as part of their curriculum and to mark the RSPB’s Feed the Birds Day.

Woodwork teacher and sculptor, Luke Villaneuve, a bird enthusiast himself, used the students’ curriculum to do something wonderful for nature.

"At this time of the year birds will be looking to be fed, i thought it would be a great idea if we could use recycled materials to create a bird table," he said.

Craft, such as woodworking, is an important part of the school curriculum. "Being creative is an important part of a person's identity. It develops self-esteem and taps into the human being's innate sense of imagination and wonder. At the age of 14, students need something to occupy them directly, they need to see concrete achievements of their results. Making these bird tables were certainly very satisfying. Not only have they created something from recycled materials, but it will now go on to benefit the wider ecology."

The school is also part of the BBC's Breathing Places programme and has an RSPB Wildlife Explorers club.

"The students make many different projects in the school," said Luke. "We recently completed toy windmills which could be wound and we are now working on a nativity scene for our Advent festival."

The school holds activities and events that are open to all. For an up to date listing of these and more about the school, go to www.holywood-steiner.co.uk.
